To the naive, or merely sensual, music appeals to emotion primarily, or titillates: a sax solo or dervish’s chant then sort of equivalent to a drug ; to the more seasoned listener, Beethoven’s 7th symphony is more akin to being in a cathedral or understanding complex series of equation, and as multi-variate calculus is to arithmetic so are the great composers to dervishes.
